Let's Decorate for a Country Christmas!
Country Christmas is my new favorite decorating idea for the holidays! It blends together woodsy nature with a country vibe, all tied up in buffalo check plaid. It feels very "Adirondack," like spending Christmas Eve at a cabin up North. It feels like home.
My favorite part - it's a relaxed and welcoming look to celebrate the holiday.
So I've put together this style guide to give you some ideas on how to create this look for your Christmas tree. Let's get started.

Okay let's be honest. A true "Country Christmas" tree should be fresh cut from the forest. Or fresh cut from a tree farm. The texture, the look, the smell... mmm. But, let's be real for a second. Some people just prefer an artificial tree for any number of reasons. So the next best thing - Balsam Hill has a huge range of artificial trees that suit any style, and at many price points. I love the look of this Silverado Slim tree for the Country Christmas theme. It looks like the perfectly imperfect Christmas tree you might find on a hike through the woods. Without the pine pitch. Or the squirrel hiding in the branches.
2. "Cranberry" wooden bead garland
We always had strands of wooden beads on my Christmas tree growing up. I love how well they work with a Country Christmas theme. They're simple to hang and make a sweet berry-like accent to the tree. This bright red would look nice with buffalo check plaid.
I love the neutral tan color and paper texture of these star ornaments for a Country Christmas tree. Tuck them deep inside the branches to fill holes and contrast the other decorations. I found these at Hobby Lobby in two different sizes.
This bold, bright red and black plaid is a big deal right now and is the prefect accent for a Country Christmas tree! Use a wired ribbon like this to make bows that you can put onto your tree branches. Or get a wider plaid fabric to make a big plaid garland. What if you used buffalo check fabric or edging for a tree skirt?
5. Pinecones
This one could be as easy as taking a walk in your backyard (before the snow falls of course). Gather up some pinecones of different shapes and sizes. Then tuck them into holes in the branches, or wire them onto the branches. Or you could glue a ribbon to the top to hang them as natural ornaments. If you can't find good pinecones you can also find bags of these at craft stores or online.
If you love birch trees as much as I do, then you'll love these ornaments. These ornaments from my shop pair birch trees and cardinals - the red matches the buffalo check! And it's a perfect mix of nature for your Country Christmas theme.
Even if you have an artificial tree, you can bring the tree farm to your Country Christmas. A red vintage pickup truck drives to Kringle's Tree Farm on this hand painted glass ornament. It's a sweet mix of vintage and country that will be perfect for this theme.
This ornament brings together every element from the rest of the style guide! I'm particularly loving this paper mâché ball ornament. It's wrinkly to give a rustic feel. Pine trees and cardinals are all around the ball. And a buffalo check bow on top ties it all together.
Here are some other ideas to go with this theme:
- dried orange slices hanging from ribbons
- wicker ball ornaments like these at Hobby Lobby
- bird house ornaments
- a rustic star topper made from sticks or wicker
- any ornaments you can find with old pickup trucks! Or make your own from old model cars
I hope this gave you some ideas to inspire your Country Christmas tree!
